From the Official Journal of the European Union art.1 of yesterday 31st August 2023, it reads that the name << Ciliegia di Lari >> (PGI) has been included in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications.
The territory boasts the presence of 14 native varieties that are part of the current production of cherries:
Papalina dal rosso cupo, Crognolo rossa lucente, Marchigiana di Lari, Morella, Gambolungo, Cuore, Paretaio, Di Giardino, Di Nello, Di Guglielmo, Orlando, Precoce di Cevoli, Siso e Usigliano
The bureaucratic process for obtaining the PGI mark began in 2014 thanks to the constant work of both the Committee for the protection and enhancement of the Lari’s cherry and the municipal administration of Casciana Terme Lari, in addition to the support of the Tuscany Region.
This recognition is also due to the associations of Lari in particular the’ Tourist Association proloco Vivi Lari that every year makes its commitment to the realization of the historic Cherry Festival and finally the traders larigiani that has always been in the their individual activities contribute to the knowledge and enhancement of the product.
